INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY

The course and emphasis of psychotherapy is different depending on the needs and presenting problems of each person. I help individuals illuminate and understand the unhealthy beliefs we have about ourselves and where they come from, internal conflicts, and what underlies difficulties in relating to others. I provide a reliable and protective relationship for the expression of difficult or painful feelings that is necessary for psychological integration and growth. Psychological integration is a central tenet of healthy functioning and means that the different dimensions of who we are (i.e., our thoughts, feelings, and behavior) are active, connected, and work together without conflict. As painful and constricting states and feelings such as depression, anxiety, guilt, shame, and fear diminish, and psychological integration increases, we find ourselves becoming stronger, more focused and expansive as individuals. We have greater confidence and ability to develop and pursue personal goals and dreams. We also have a greater capacity and choice to form quality friendships and intimate relationships. We feel more joy and contentment in living.

COUPLES THERAPY

As a couples therapist, I work toward a full understanding of each person’s feelings and experience in being with their partner. I help each to communicate their feelings and experience in new and constructive ways. I also work to illuminate how each person’s relational history shapes how we think, feel, and behave in our current relationship. The result of this work is that each person gains a new and more comprehensive understanding of his or her partner. Individuals who feel understood, validated and respected by their partners become motivated to learn and grow with one another. This leads to a deeper and more vitalized engagement, more enjoyment, and passion.

CLINICAL CONSULTATION

I work with my consultees to develop a cohesive theoretical framework of psychological development, pathology, and psychological health to guide their work. I believe in a theory of practice that is unencumbered with metapsychology allowing for enhanced appreciation and versatility in working with each unique individual. I help consultees build trust in their own sensibilities and instincts and to utilize their life experience in attenuating to and understanding the experiential world of the person they are working with. I emphasize the power of immediacy in the bi-directional transference as a central and valuable dimension of psychotherapy.
